Skyros Pony
The Skyrian is the third of the Greek pony groups and , like the Peneia, is not extremely rare. They are found on the island of Skyros and are an ancient breed. There is no documentation as to how they came to be on the island and this is now a matter of conjecture. They used to live a mostly semi-wild life. roaming in herds across the island but they are now mainly kept by individuals for riding and light harness work. They have the same qualities as the other Greek breeds, being extremely tough, hardy, enduring, surefooted, and sound in wind and limb. Their conformation is not very good but this does not seem to affect their work unduly. In appearance, they are small, fine-boned and light-framed ponies, with an attractive head, short neck, compact back, and weak quarters. They have exceptionally hard feet and rarely require shoeing. Their temperaments are good and they make good ponies for children. They are mostly brown, bay, or grey in color and stand up to 11 hh.
